Are you a high school teacher or counselor with students who have great potential but who aren’t at the top of their class, don’t have other scholarship opportunities, and who face hardships or challenges that may make higher education or career/vocational training difficult or even impossible without financial assistance?
The TCTA Scholarship Program is accepting applications through May 1, 2014. Thanks to the generosity of the late Charles and Phyllis Gottlieb, the TCTA Scholarship Program has awarded $335,000 since 2010, and nearly $130,000 more is expected to be awarded in fall 2014.
A different kind of scholarship
When establishing the scholarship criteria, TCTA honored Phyllis Gottlieb's wishes, which were that educators be the ones who identify and nominate students for the scholarship and that students chosen be those who have the potential and desire to succeed in higher education but who would not likely have the opportunity to do so without assistance.
TCTA scholarships are available to assist students pursuing courses of study leading to recognized degrees at accredited two- or four-year colleges, community colleges or career/technical schools. Scholarships may be awarded in amounts up to $5,000 per year for tuition and required fees. Discounts or tuition waivers and other financial assistance received will be considered when determining the amount of the scholarship awarded. Students receiving scholarships may be eligible for renewal based on satisfaction of specific academic criteria and availability of funds.
To be nominated, a student must:
- Be a high school senior
- Be a U.S. citizen and Texas resident
- Demonstrate financial need (at or below twice the poverty level)
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Demonstrate traits of strong personal character and potential for success
Preference is given to students who are the first in their families to seek higher education.
High school-level teacher or counselor nominations are required. TCTA membership of a nominator or the parent of a nominee is neither an advantage nor a disqualifier in the awarding of scholarships. Applicants may not be nominated by their parents.
Completed nominations/applications must be submitted by May 1, 2014, along with an official high school transcript, which may be sent by mail or email to:
